Ebb & Flow of the Tides

I have to go with the ebb & flow of the tides -- work tides, that is! My "tween jobs" could last a minute or a month. Use it wisely! Immediately after pushing send to deliver my work, I clean house, do yardwork, grocery shop...Cuz when a job comes in, I may be stuck at the keyboard for a looong time.

[TODAY's TIP: Ebb? ]

No Holidays for Freelancers!

Dec. 26, the day after Christmas, is also known as "Boxing Day." Everyone in Corp. America has the day off and is at the mall returning. Me? My fingers are glued to the keyboard, helping my clients complete their end-of-year rush jobs. But, what's "Boxing Day" anyway?

[TODAY's TIP:  What's  Boxing Day?]

Freelance Feast or Famine

One client offers me a well-paid 2-day rush job. I said yes. An hour later another client offers me a well-paid 2-day rush job, on the same 2 days! I had to turn it down. Now I could go for weeks with no work. Feast or famine. Peaks and valleys. Don't freelance if you can't handle the "sine curve" of the work load!

[TODAY's TIP:  What's a sine curve, you ask? SINE CURVE]

No Sick Leave for Freelancers!

Wondering where I've been for a while? In bed with pneumonia! Ah, the freedom of being a freelance is great. But the downside is that there's only you and there's no corporate "paid sick leave". Yup, no sick days for freelancers! Lost time. Lost money. Lost clients? But you don't want to lose your house!

[TODAY's TIP:  Consider "disabilty insurance" if you freelance: INFO]

You Think You've Seen it All...

...and then something new comes along! I consider myself lucky if I get paid at all -- clients run out of money, refuse to pay until they've been paid, or pay very late (despite "NET 30" on the invoice). However, a recent client sent me a check in a hand made, bought-at-a-craft-fair greeting card, with a nice handwritten note inside. Made my day! More than made up for a few past troublesome clients!

[TODAY's TIP:  See commonly used invoice payment terms: TERMS]

Sometimes Writers Teach!

I was a guest lecturer at the "Nutrition Communication Masters Program" (Tufts, Boston). Subject? Creating a writing portfolio to use in the job search. This 'burbs-dweller GPS'ed her way into the city, parked, and then had to do some walking. But, I had already pre-walked my route! Yup, pre-walked it with my mouse--kinda today's take on "let your fingers do the walking."

[TODAY's TIP:  Use Google Maps (satellite view) to see the buildings, streets, and sidewalks and plan your way around the city before you go: Google Maps]

Tower+Laptop --> Mega Laptop

Best freelance tech move I ever made? Ditching my PC tower + laptop and buying one suped-up HP PC laptop with mega speed and memory (I got the max of both). No more emailing myself stuff. No more dumping files on USB keys. I pick up one computer now and go. I can work anywhere remotely and have everything I need on it. Really simplified my work life. Really made me truly "portable."

[TODAY's TIP:  Read this handy: LAPTOP BUYING GUIDE]

Sleep in on the Weekend?

Sleep in on the weekend? Not! Saturday: Up early, suit on, and into the city for the ACAAI conference—see the new clinical trial results, document them, and talk with the investigators. Saturday panic: Camera battery light starting blinking and camera promptly died. What now?! My extra battery. Sunday: Up early, stay in PJs, and start pounding the keyboard to meet my press deadline. Sunday panic: Keyboard stopped typing. What now?! The wireless wonder was hungry for more double A's. My freelancing gadgets have a voracious appetite for rechargeable batteries!

[TODAY's TIP:  Read about proper disposal of rechargeable batteries: DISPOSAL]

Black Snow All Over

I’ve wanted to blog for a while, but never got “round tuit.” The final kick in the pants to get going was yesterday as my print grew fainter and fainter… So I shook my laser printer ink cartridge to get a few more pages out of it (phreelance phrugality). The Phreelance Phantom strikes again and -- POOF -- the black powdery toner flew all over me, the floor, and the guts of the printer. What now? Walmart: “Spill in aisle 9.” I don't think so! Vacuum cleaner. Sponge. Soap. Windex. Paper towels. Change clothes. Do laundry. Ah, my reward for frugality...

[TODAY's TIP: Save toner. See tip #5 at www.ehow.com]
