Viruses Everywhere!

So, I've been down for the count with a nasty nasty virus (And I had my flu shot!). Been fighting it off for four weeks now. And my poor computer was getting slower and slower and more and more frequently giving me the "blue screen of death". Applications didn't open. Email wouldn't work. Finally hauled it into the shop and left it for a day. I had a "root kit" virus (google it). But, 8 hrs and $100 later, it was all better. Wish I could say the same for me. :-(

Get Your Virus Protection Software

Seen somewhere: "Don't think of it as a flu shot; think of it as installing virus protection software." -- When you freelance, there are no sick days. None. No work; no pay. So, get your flu shot because you don't want to be in bed for two weeks not making money!

TODAY's TIP: The CDC says -- "Influenza is a serious disease..."

A Chance to Market Yourself #2

Never miss a chance to market yourself--to tell the world: here I am! When I set up my email and it asks for a "display name" that people see--your real name instead of your email address--I don't just put "Cheryl Lathrop", I put "Cheryl Lathrop, Medical Writer". So, anyone that looks at their email inbox, and sees that 20 just came in-- sees my name and what I am. Simple and free advertising!

TODAY's TIP: Learn more about a "display name".

"I Don't Speak Spanish"

Working on a team writing content to insert into templates. On a status conference call. Writer complains she can't speak Spanish and cannot complete her assignment. Much discussion of why her template might have gotten converted to Spanish. Turns out that template items were filled in with "lorem ipsum"!! Freelancers note: Lorem ipsum is non-sensical Latin placeholder text used to demonstrate the graphic elements of a document by removing the distraction of meaningful content.

TODAY's TIP: Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipisicing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolor...

A Chance to Market Yourself #1

Yesterday I attended a client webinar. In the sign-in list I see my full name, a few other full names, but mostly I see Joe, Sue, John, Mary. Really?! Let the world know who you are! The email that went out to all had people listed as JSmith and MJones. No clue who is who.

TODAY's TIP: Let everyone know that you are "John Smith" or "Mary Jones". Sign in with your full name. Then people will know your name, and may link to you on LinkedIn, or better yet call you. And remember you better! You're freelancing -- you want to get your name out there and stuck in people's minds. Don't miss even the tiniest opportunity to market yourself! ________________________________________________

Make Hay While The Sun Shines . . .

...as they say. I say: "Write words while the power is on." With hurricane Sandy and yesterday's Nor'Easter (6" snow for me) both slamming into the east coast, the power hasn't always been on during my work day. And I've been forced to stay up all night and write to keep to my schedules! Oh well! You do what you gotta do to keep your clients happy! And this seems to mean working when the power is on, and sleeping when it is not!

TODAY's TIP: Remember that your phone with portable 'babies' that live in a charging cradle won't work without electricity. Always keep at least 1 old-fashioned landline phone in your house -- it works even if power is out -- cuz you'll need to call the electric company to report your outage. (Also keep the electric company's phone number with this landline; mine was in my computer contacts program, and I couldn't look it up.) And clients still need to reach you!

Playing Medical Reporter Today

Up early, dressed in 'real' clothes, and off to the city today to cover the ASCP conference. I read posters of the latest research and turn them into prose articles. (I also talk to the researcher standing beside the poster.) Now to write 10 articles in 48 hours! Talk about a press deadline!

TODAY's TIP: See my articles in a few days at Doctors Guide. Just search on my name. I've been writing for them for a few years. It's hectic work, but it gives me great 'samples' for getting other jobs!

Happy Halloween!

Alas, but Halloween is simply another day for this lonely freelancer. When I worked in Corp. America, we all got dressed up on Halloweeen, and paraded down the hall to the executive suites. Great fun! So, I bought a mask at the dollar store, and put it on to dispense candy tonight. Still great fun! But on a much smaller scale! (And I got more work done today than I would have in Corp. America! Clients like that!)

TODAY's TIP: Want to know more about Halloween?

Hurricane Sandy

It's Tuesday and all is now quiet here on the East Coast. But, yesterday (Monday) hurricane Sandy blew through here. What does this mean to me as a freelancer? On Sunday, while I had power, while Sandy was still out at sea, I stayed up all night--yes, all night!--working while I had power. So, Monday when I did lose power, I had already done all my Monday work!

I now have a Google+ profile. Why? I thought that FB, LI, and TW were enough exposure. But, clients wanted me on Google+ for "authorship" reasons. So, now all my bylined writing samples are linked there.

Beating the (Electronic) Bushes Today

I had some great freelance jobs lined up. But, alas, client budgets changed, needs changed, desires changed. As they say: "It happens!" So, today I'm electronically beating the bushes to line up new jobs. I always start with CraigsList and give it a quick once over (few minutes). Then I move onto more "targeted marketing" -- contacting past clients and cold calling new, but similar, clients. And always, but always, I have my *samples* at the ready -- as jobs in this biz are won by having writing *samples*. I store mine on my WEB SITE so I only have to send URLs, not PDFs. Easier!

TODAY's TIP: Or I provide a URL to my work online at a client site. (These are all my bylined articles.)

So, I'm all excited by my upcoming ghost-blogging job. Then an upper level exec--a dinosaur--who doesn't believe in blogs (what's a blog?) kills the effort. Well, marketing was on the right track using social media with new fresh content each day (full of SEO words for Google searches). Sigh...

Ghosting (Close to Halloween...)

Looking forward to my new job ghost-blogging. Interview expert; pick their brain; compose blog post; pass it by them for approval. Gets the info out. They don't have time to write; I do. I don't know the technical; they do. Good marriage of me and my technical expert partners! (And this was why I set up my own 2 blogs -- to gain blog experience to then get a paying blog job. Mission accomplished!)

TODAY's TIP: Set up a blog for yourself. Tis easy with Blogger or Wordpress.

Yes, I Also Teach Webinars

Tonight I presented a 1-hour webinar to the Editorial Freelancers Association as part of their education series. My webinar covered creating writing/editing samples, artistic presentation of the samples, and creating a green e-portfolio. Hard to teach and manage the webinar technology to accept questions/comments while teaching, and respond. But, all went well! (I used GoToWebinar.)

TODAY's TIP: Webinar = web + seminar.

Clickety Clack! Is That My Laptop?

Pushed laptop 'on' button. Clickety clack. Oh no! Laptop dying! I have to work! Jumped in car & took it to my computer guy. At 5pm got 'puter back good as new. Thank goodness for outsourced computer services! Twas the dirty fan. Vacuum cleaner won't work due to HP (bad) design; need to blow out dust with compressed air.

TODAY's TIP: HP laptop fans are famous for bad design and running hot. Feeling adventurous? Clean your own fan video. HAHA. Best $100 I ever spent on my IT guy!

I get a lot of "rescue work." Another writer did a bad, or incomplete, job. And it needs to be fixed--and fast! Hence, last minute, due yesterday, rescue work. Take it! It's not fun, or exciting, but it's work. Don't let your ego get in the way of your dollars. Yes I gave up time I planned to have off, but, I made brownie points with my client.

I love Friday's! Why? Well...

...the morning is a regular work morning with clients calling and emailing about ongoing projects. But then they all go out to lunch, many don't come back, many leave early -- and I find Friday afternoons peaceful and quiet without any dinging email or ringing phones. And I get twice as much work done without the interruptions! Full disclosure: When in Corp. America, I too was guilty of the "Friday afternoons"!   :-)

TODAY's TIP: Friday afternoon cartoons.

Phone is Ringing After Labor Day!

Yup, I was right! After the summer doldrums, now the clients are back from vacation and back in their offices and the phone is once again ringing. Yeah! I always make sure I take on extra work in the spring so I have enough money to get me through the summer. And, since work has its ups and downs, I always keep a 3-month reserve in liquid funds.

TODAY's TIP: What are "summer doldrums"?

End of Summer Quiet...

I always find the end of the summer very quiet. I think clients are using up their vacation days, because no one, and I mean no one, is reachable. But -- after Labor Day, when the kids are back in school and life returns to normal, then clients look at their project plans and see all that has to be completed in the calendar year... And then the phone starts ringing off the hook!

TODAY's TIP: So what's LABOR DAY anyway?

Looking for [s]taples at [S]taples

So, I need staples (lower case s). I stop at Staples (upper case S). Am wandering the aisles--an employee asks me what I need... Trying to keep a straight face, I say "I need staples." Urban Dictionary is My Best Friend

Not only is it a global economy, but the generations are mixed up! No longer do gray-beards sit atop the corporate structure. Now he may be at the bottom and a 28 yr. female at the top. Corporate structure has been flattened and upended. Consequently, I work with many age groups and cultural groups. And I don't always 'get' the lingo! Urban Dictionary to the rescue!

Staples at Staples

I am so glad they invented Staples! (And all the other office supply stores). Remember the days of supplies only being available at the drug store (or else you liberated them from your Corporate America supply cabinet). I run to Staples for my staples--pencils and computers, and everything in between. Plus they deliver to my doorstep when I shop online. Just another of the many jobs I do as a Jill-of-all-trades freelancer -- be a supply maven and keep my office supplied with the staples of freelancing.

TODAY's TIP: Some office supply cartoons for you!

Too Much Work Lately!

Well, I always say that working freelance is like a sine curve -- up and down -- feast or famine! I was working 24/7 and now I have nothing. But, I know the feast will return, so I am cleaning the house and doing yard work while I can. Of course, the feast will not return unless one prospects for work: contact old clients, cultivate new clients with a cold call (via email), etc.

TODAY's TIP: Do you know the difference between "cold calling" and "warm calling"?

I'm an "Accidental Medical Writer"

Did I tell you I was an "Accidental Medical Writer"? Yes, I'm a Math major, Computer Science minor, and worked as an engineer for a loooong time -- until all my jobs went to India and my companies disappeared out from under me. What to do now? A friend said, Why not try medical writing? And so I did. And now I am! That's the story I tell in my AMWA "NP?NP!" roundtable. If I can come out of left field and be successful, you can come out of the lab or the practice, or wherever -- and do it too!

TODAY's TIP: Thanks to my freelance colleagues Brian and Cyndy who coined the term!

Didn't get any work done today. Spent the weekend in Phily cuz I had to teach a writing class on Saturday. No, not paid! Volunteer work for my professional organization, AMWA (the Delaware Valley Chapter). But, it was way down in Philly -- a loooong way down 95 from Boston! And I learned lots also in the sessions I attended. A great learning day with other freelancers.

Is Today a "Real" Day?

So -- is today -- Feb. 29 --  Leap Day -- a "real" day? All I know is that I am in my chair working, and my clients are calling and emailing me, so they seem to be working -- so, that seems real enough for me! Hmmm....I wonder if I get paid for Leap Day?!    :-)   I am also a very thankful freelancer to have work, when many don't. Although, it can be trying at times with a lot of deliverables in a very tight timeframe. I am working a good 10 hrs a day lately -- workshops, WEBEXs, e-Modules, Assessment Questions, Patient Profiles (Case Studies). VARIETY!

Babies Babies Everywhere!

You see, the assumption is that you are sitting at your desk from 9-5:00. Ha! We freelance so we can do the laundry, read the mail, and other odd assorted tasks around the house. But, ya gotta keep up the illusion of sitting there waiting for the client's call. Easy! Get a phone with a base and a lot of cordless "babies." A baby goes in every room in the house and in the basement -- and, yes, also in the bathroom! No one says where I am sitting waiting for your call. And cordless so you can walk around, go out and get the mail, or go sit on the deck. I can always answer anywhere and everywhere. Makes for happy clients!

To Blog or Not To Blog?

Today I had to actually "get dressed." (Keep those webcams outta my office!) Outta the sweats and bunny slippers and into the suit. Attended the AMWA-NE Roundtable Brunch Discussions. My table discussed: "Blogging for Medical Writers." Great discussion with my peers--some of us already blogged, some didn't. At the end of the 2-hour discussion, I think we agreed that all should. So many benefits. And it's not just about your ego; it's also good for business! More details.

Just Call Me Janitorial Services!

Sometimes you just have to make rules with yourself. My latest: no open glasses of water on my desk. Yup, you guessed it -- knocked over an entire large glass of water all over everything. And, alas, as I am both writer and janitorial services, the cleanup fell to me: drying out paper and hairdryer-ing my keyboard. The worst was the open desk drawer that the waterfall poured into! (Maybe I need a sippy cup! Nothing escapes that!)

TODAY's TIP (just for fun): Know how a SIPPY CUP works and who invented it?

Honor Your Biorhythms

When do you do your best work? When does your creativity flow? In Corporate America, I was forced to produce between 9-5:00pm. No more! Freelancing set me free! And I discovered that I am a night person. That I like to futz around all day, and then sit down and write for my eight hours from 8:00pm-4:00am (when the world is quiet). Freelancing lets me honor my natural biorhythms, and it feels good.

Today's Webcam Adventures

Wanted to Skype with my laptop (& its built-in webcam) closed--as I usually use it closed as a CPU/tower back behind my giant monitor. Tried my old webcam; fought with it for hours & hours; no way was it gonna work with WIN7. Off to Walmart for a new $19 webcam. Was truly plug-n-play! Up and running & Skyping in no time. However, I still had the work, and reference materials, so I could answer their questions and make the revisions they needed. Since I have gone totally "e" (electronic) and therefore "paperless", keeping things doesn't clutter up my office like in the old days. You just have to keep your hard disk super organized: by year, by customer, by job...

[TODAY's TIP: "The Paperless Office"]
