Is Today a "Real" Day?

So -- is today -- Feb. 29 --  Leap Day -- a "real" day? All I know is that I am in my chair working, and my clients are calling and emailing me, so they seem to be working -- so, that seems real enough for me! Hmmm....I wonder if I get paid for Leap Day?!    :-)   I am also a very thankful freelancer to have work, when many don't. Although, it can be trying at times with a lot of deliverables in a very tight timeframe. I am working a good 10 hrs a day lately -- workshops, WEBEXs, e-Modules, Assessment Questions, Patient Profiles (Case Studies). VARIETY!

TODAY's TIP: Why do we have LEAP DAY?________________________________________________

Fingers Glued to the Keyboard

Long President's Day weekend. No fun for me! Project got in trouble & lotsa deliverables had to go out. Midnight Sat. freelancers 'asked' (read that 'ordered') to work rest of weekend. I said yes with a smile (that was more like a grimace!). Cancel all plans. Fingers glued to keyboard Sun. &  Mon. Hands & wrists very sore, but the project is now moving along. Whew! Glad that fire drill is over (now we're back to regular project craziness). You just never know what each freelance day is gonna bring! And ya gotta roll with the punches!

Babies Babies Everywhere!

You see, the assumption is that you are sitting at your desk from 9-5:00. Ha! We freelance so we can do the laundry, read the mail, and other odd assorted tasks around the house. But, ya gotta keep up the illusion of sitting there waiting for the client's call. Easy! Get a phone with a base and a lot of cordless "babies." A baby goes in every room in the house and in the basement -- and, yes, also in the bathroom! No one says where I am sitting waiting for your call. And cordless so you can walk around, go out and get the mail, or go sit on the deck. I can always answer anywhere and everywhere. Makes for happy clients!

TODAY's TIP: MY PHONE & BABIES

What Happens in Freelance...

...stays in freelance. Woke up this morning, was ready to take a nice long shower and make myself a nice breakfast. Oops! Remembered I had an early morning telecom! Quick, throw on yesterday’s clothes, scrape hair back in a pony tail, grab a granola bar, and jump on the call – and answer in my best “yes I really am clean and wearing my business suit” voice! Whew! Don’t tell anyone. What happens in freelance stays in freelance. (Did I say it loudly enough? No webcams in my office!)

TODAY's TIP:  WHAT I SOUNDED LIKE    *   WHAT I LOOKED LIKE

Keep Webcams Outta My Office!

Had a great conversation recently with some other freelancers. And we all agreed -- we never want to Skype with our clients! Strikes terror in our hearts! Why? Because then we'd have to get dressed and comb our hair! And we definitely don't want to do that! The beauty of freelancing is working in your jammies and bunny slippers. And believe me -- we do!

TODAY's TIP: THE FREELANCE PROFESSIONAL WARDROBE

To Blog or Not To Blog?

Today I had to actually "get dressed." (Keep those webcams outta my office!) Outta the sweats and bunny slippers and into the suit. Attended the AMWA-NE Roundtable Brunch Discussions. My table discussed: "Blogging for Medical Writers." Great discussion with my peers--some of us already blogged, some didn't. At the end of the 2-hour discussion, I think we agreed that all should. So many benefits. And it's not just about your ego; it's also good for business! More details.

TODAY's TIP (summed up nicely here): "21 Key Benefits of Blogging"

Just Call Me Janitorial Services!

Sometimes you just have to make rules with yourself. My latest: no open glasses of water on my desk. Yup, you guessed it -- knocked over an entire large glass of water all over everything. And, alas, as I am both writer and janitorial services, the cleanup fell to me: drying out paper and hairdryer-ing my keyboard. The worst was the open desk drawer that the waterfall poured into! (Maybe I need a sippy cup! Nothing escapes that!)

TODAY's TIP (just for fun): Know how a SIPPY CUP works and who invented it?

Honor Your Biorhythms

When do you do your best work? When does your creativity flow? In Corporate America, I was forced to produce between 9-5:00pm. No more! Freelancing set me free! And I discovered that I am a night person. That I like to futz around all day, and then sit down and write for my eight hours from 8:00pm-4:00am (when the world is quiet). Freelancing lets me honor my natural biorhythms, and it feels good.

[TODAY's TIP: Define BIORHYTHMS]
