Happy Halloween!

Alas, but Halloween is simply another day for this lonely freelancer. When I worked in Corp. America, we all got dressed up on Halloweeen, and paraded down the hall to the executive suites. Great fun! So, I bought a mask at the dollar store, and put it on to dispense candy tonight. Still great fun! But on a much smaller scale! (And I got more work done today than I would have in Corp. America! Clients like that!)

TODAY's TIP: Want to know more about Halloween?

Hurricane Sandy

It's Tuesday and all is now quiet here on the East Coast. But, yesterday (Monday) hurricane Sandy blew through here. What does this mean to me as a freelancer? On Sunday, while I had power, while Sandy was still out at sea, I stayed up all night--yes, all night!--working while I had power. So, Monday when I did lose power, I had already done all my Monday work!

I'm Now On Google+

I now have a Google+ profile. Why? I thought that FB, LI, and TW were enough exposure. But, clients wanted me on Google+ for "authorship" reasons. So, now all my bylined writing samples are linked there.

TODAY's TIP: Find me on Google+. What's authorship?

Beating the (Electronic) Bushes Today

I had some great freelance jobs lined up. But, alas, client budgets changed, needs changed, desires changed. As they say: "It happens!" So, today I'm electronically beating the bushes to line up new jobs. I always start with CraigsList and give it a quick once over (few minutes). Then I move onto more "targeted marketing" -- contacting past clients and cold calling new, but similar, clients. And always, but always, I have my *samples* at the ready -- as jobs in this biz are won by having writing *samples*. I store mine on my WEB SITE so I only have to send URLs, not PDFs. Easier!

TODAY's TIP: Or I provide a URL to my work online at a client site. (These are all my bylined articles.)

Alas, He's a Dinosaur!

So, I'm all excited by my upcoming ghost-blogging job. Then an upper level exec--a dinosaur--who doesn't believe in blogs (what's a blog?) kills the effort. Well, marketing was on the right track using social media with new fresh content each day (full of SEO words for Google searches). Sigh...

TODAY's TIP: You do know what SEO is, don't you?!

Ghosting (Close to Halloween...)

Looking forward to my new job ghost-blogging. Interview expert; pick their brain; compose blog post; pass it by them for approval. Gets the info out. They don't have time to write; I do. I don't know the technical; they do. Good marriage of me and my technical expert partners! (And this was why I set up my own 2 blogs -- to gain blog experience to then get a paying blog job. Mission accomplished!)

TODAY's TIP: Set up a blog for yourself. Tis easy with Blogger or Wordpress.

Yes, I Also Teach Webinars

Tonight I presented a 1-hour webinar to the Editorial Freelancers Association as part of their education series. My webinar covered creating writing/editing samples, artistic presentation of the samples, and creating a green e-portfolio. Hard to teach and manage the webinar technology to accept questions/comments while teaching, and respond. But, all went well! (I used GoToWebinar.)

TODAY's TIP: Webinar = web + seminar.
