Get Your Virus Protection Software

Seen somewhere: "Don't think of it as a flu shot; think of it as installing virus protection software." -- When you freelance, there are no sick days. None. No work; no pay. So, get your flu shot because you don't want to be in bed for two weeks not making money!

TODAY's TIP: The CDC says -- "Influenza is a serious disease..."

A Chance to Market Yourself #2

Never miss a chance to market yourself--to tell the world: here I am! When I set up my email and it asks for a "display name" that people see--your real name instead of your email address--I don't just put "Cheryl Lathrop", I put "Cheryl Lathrop, Medical Writer". So, anyone that looks at their email inbox, and sees that 20 just came in-- sees my name and what I am. Simple and free advertising!

TODAY's TIP: Learn more about a "display name".

"I Don't Speak Spanish"

Working on a team writing content to insert into templates. On a status conference call. Writer complains she can't speak Spanish and cannot complete her assignment. Much discussion of why her template might have gotten converted to Spanish. Turns out that template items were filled in with "lorem ipsum"!! Freelancers note: Lorem ipsum is non-sensical Latin placeholder text used to demonstrate the graphic elements of a document by removing the distraction of meaningful content.

TODAY's TIP: Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipisicing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolor...

A Chance to Market Yourself #1

Yesterday I attended a client webinar. In the sign-in list I see my full name, a few other full names, but mostly I see Joe, Sue, John, Mary. Really?! Let the world know who you are! The email that went out to all had people listed as JSmith and MJones. No clue who is who.

TODAY's TIP: Let everyone know that you are "John Smith" or "Mary Jones". Sign in with your full name. Then people will know your name, and may link to you on LinkedIn, or better yet call you. And remember you better! You're freelancing -- you want to get your name out there and stuck in people's minds. Don't miss even the tiniest opportunity to market yourself! ________________________________________________

Make Hay While The Sun Shines . . .

...as they say. I say: "Write words while the power is on." With hurricane Sandy and yesterday's Nor'Easter (6" snow for me) both slamming into the east coast, the power hasn't always been on during my work day. And I've been forced to stay up all night and write to keep to my schedules! Oh well! You do what you gotta do to keep your clients happy! And this seems to mean working when the power is on, and sleeping when it is not!

TODAY's TIP: Remember that your phone with portable 'babies' that live in a charging cradle won't work without electricity. Always keep at least 1 old-fashioned landline phone in your house -- it works even if power is out -- cuz you'll need to call the electric company to report your outage. (Also keep the electric company's phone number with this landline; mine was in my computer contacts program, and I couldn't look it up.) And clients still need to reach you!

Playing Medical Reporter Today

Up early, dressed in 'real' clothes, and off to the city today to cover the ASCP conference. I read posters of the latest research and turn them into prose articles. (I also talk to the researcher standing beside the poster.) Now to write 10 articles in 48 hours! Talk about a press deadline!

TODAY's TIP: See my articles in a few days at Doctors Guide. Just search on my name. I've been writing for them for a few years. It's hectic work, but it gives me great 'samples' for getting other jobs!
