Crowdfunding Clinical Trials

Well, when the NIH doesn't have the budget to fund enough clinical trials -- and you have an interest in a specific disease -- researchers are turning to crowdfunding strategies -- raising small amounts of money from lots of different sources instead of relying on big sums from one source. Studies are audited so donors can watch their money and the progress of the research. Google: Experiment, Consano, and Give to Cure (GTC).

Don't Let It Happen To You!

Did you see what just happened to Brian Williams, NBC newscaster? Suspended for 6 months without pay--after having a stellar career. He told 1 story in the news: I was in the helicopter behind the one that got hit. And another on a talk show (to make the story more interesting): I was in the helicopter that got hit. Not worth it! Never never embellish a story or news article.

Boston: Working in a Snow Storm

With 3' on the ground, and another 2' actively falling, I've really learned a lesson. Keep my iPhone fully charged at all times. As sometimes it's the only way clients can reach me: email, text, phone. When the power goes out, so does my FiOS Wi-Fi -- all that's left is the 3G/4G network.

Social Media: Not Optional Anymore

The "big 6" of social networks: Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Google+, YouTube, Instagram. Social Media is "here to stay." Being on them is now an obligation, not an option. So, get yourself online! (From an Open Session presentation at the AMWA 74th Annual Conference.)

New Vocabulary Word

Today I am redacting (blacking out names and patient identifying information like names, ages, etc.) a Clinical Study Report (CSR) for a client. It is several hundred pages. A journal submission requires us to submit this, but HIPPA says we cannot endanger any patient's confidentiality. Hence the redaction. Buy yourself Adobe Pro.(Reminds me of World War II letters sent home that had to pass through the redactors.)

Chip on Your Shoulder?

"The greatest ability in business is to get along with others and influence their actions. A chip on the shoulder is too heavy a piece of baggage to carry through life."

TED: Short Powerful Talks

"TED is a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less). TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 100 languages. Meanwhile, independently run TEDx events help share ideas in communities around the world."
